Evaluating ChatGPT Translation: a comparative study on a popular science text

Abstract

This research delves into the application of the advanced language model "ChatGPT" for translation purposes. The study adopts a popular text as a case study to assess ChatGPT's translation capabilities and its potential as either a substitute or an aid for human translators. By comparing ChatGPT's neural AI with the outputs of the statistical method based “Yandex Translate”, the study finds that ChatGPT's neural AI can produce translations that closely resemble human-like quality, particularly in the domain of popular science discourse. Overall, the study highlights the technology's significance as a valuable tool for translators, enhancing their efficiency in performing their tasks
