Abstract

: Metaphor has long been used as a rhetorical device in literary language. Its role was limited to embellishing style and adding a touch of beauty to it. However, studies in this area proved that the role of this latter extends beyond the literary field to the scientific one, which was not previously perceived that way. The use of metaphor in scientific texts was commonly aiming at popularizing them and enabling the lay reader, not specialized in a given area, to consult them. Yet, the use of metaphor has been extended to specialized texts, medical texts for instance, in which it has a different dimension because its significance here is reflected on both perceptional and conceptional levels rather than mere terms and expressions. Hence, the purpose of using metaphor in specialized fields is not only limited to popularizing information for the general public but also serves researchers and specialists during early stages of their studies and researches.
