Documentary research in literary translation: An empirical study on some translators’ practices

This research aims at raising translators’ awareness about documentary research when it comes to literary translation, by determining the characteristics and types of information sources and the best methods to choose them. The paper also aims at determining the nature and characteristics of information the translator may need. To serve these objectives a sample of translations was studied to assess their quality.
The study results demonstrated that translators of literary texts just like those of scientific ones; do need appropriate documentary research, when the source text includes scientific terms or cultural, religious, or civilizational aspects. The study also revealed a translation quality variance depending on the method used in researching whether for choosing the parts that need to be checked or selecting appropriate sources. The better the translator selects the right information and its source the better quality he gets.
