Aspects of cultural interaction in the translation of popular proverbs between Spanish and Arabic

Abstract

This topic deals with a collection of Spanish popular proverbs, translating them literally, explaining them, and finding their equivalent into the Algerian popular proverb, and demonstrating the aspects of cultural interaction; as translation has an important role in the exchange of cultures. This is a well-known mean of transferring and exchanging cultures, knowledge, and sciences, and providing all people the opportunity for cultural and civilizational communication. As for popular proverbs, they are a cultural heritage and a linguistic content for any society, and they differ from one society to another and from one culture to another. Therefore, it was necessary for the translator to know and deeply understand the meanings of proverbs in the source language. In this study, we try to analyse and extract the contents and connotations of proverbs in both languages, and to compare the degree of similarity and difference between the two different cultures, and mention how the Arab culture influence on the Spanish one in the linguistic, cultural, and social aspects, while explaining some of the techniques that were used in translation.
