Translation Memory Systems: An Applied Strategy for Designing Machine Translation Programs

Abstract

This study aims to present the Translation Memory system, which is one of the key tools that assist machine translation. It stores human-translated texts in a dedicated database, thereby ensuring translation accuracy when the meaning matches previously translated content. Salwa Hamadeh elaborated on this system in her book Translation Memory in Machine Translation, explaining its stages, operation, advantages, challenges, system interfaces, and practical examples of translations using this tool. Accordingly, the central issue addressed in this study revolves around the question: How can machine translation systems be developed in light of the emergence of neural machine translation tools? The study concludes by proposing an approach to improve the system, emphasizing that both computational linguistics and neural computing are foundational to the computational representation of the Arabic language. These elements are essential for preparing the language for automatic processing and computational representation, which, in turn, requires a comprehensive linguistic description in order to develop Translation Memory systems and other related tools.
