The paper on translation of the Risala Critical approach of Léon BERCHER’s translation of the epistle of Ibn Abi Zayd Al Qayrawani into French

Abstract

This paper attempts to criticise Léon Bercher's translation of some passages from Ibn Abi Zaid al-Qayrawani's epistle into French, a brief letter on the doctrine of Imam Malik, that included a doctrinal introduction and jurisprudential rulings, by examining the areas of its success and studying the techniques and strategies used by the translator in conveying the meanings of this text, which is considered a reference for every Muslim, which suffices him from detailed books to understand its practical rulings. It explains some of the translator’s shortcomings, based on critical inductive approach and relying on some translation techniques: borrowing, transposition and clarification, especially that the letter is full of jurisprudential terminology and Quranic quotations that are hard to transfer into French, noting the importance of religious translation, which the orientalists dealt with, and highlighting its role in transmitting legal rulings to those who do not master Arabic. The article will seek to know the extent of Bercher's success in transmitting the meanings of Ibn Abi Zaid al-Qayrawani's message into French?
