Abstract

The translation of idiomatic expressions poses one of the most complex challenges for translators, given their deep roots in the culture and language of the source community. These expressions are inherently figurative, and their meanings cannot be derived from the literal interpretations of their words. As a result, a profound understanding of linguistic and cultural contexts is essential. The difficulties become even more pronounced when significant differences exist between the source and target languages and cultures.

Key obstacles include cultural incongruities, structural linguistic variations, the figurative nature of idiomatic expressions, and their temporal persistence. To effectively navigate these challenges, comprehensive cultural research should precede the translation process, steering precise, unproductive literal renderings in favour of more interpretive approaches. This may involve using culturally appropriate equivalents supplemented by explanatory notes or clarifications to convey the intended meaning accurately. This study explores strategies for achieving a critical balance between fidelity to the source text and ensuring comprehensibility for the target audience-a pivotal challenge for translators dealing with idiomatic expressions.
