Abstract

It is a scholarly biography which retraces Jean Baetens wanderings, from cultural studies to semiotics, while questioning a possible encounter between the two disciplines. For this, he introduces semiotics into cultural studies, on a theoretical level, on several levels. First of all, in the very definition of culture, the first and last object of cultural studies: culture is a sign, that is to say, not the thing itself but an object or structure that represents something for someone at a given time, and the mechanisms of this representation are examined primarily with the tools of semiotics. Culture and nature do not coincide, and culture does not reflect the world, it creates it, it is an active element in the articulation of a worldview, but without this action being deterministic or mechanical. Secondly in the challenges of analyzing culture as a sign: culture being made (created, produced, manufactured), it is also possible to undo it, that is to say to do it differently, and it is the objective of cultural studies.
