Translation of a chapter by Hartmut Rosa: Moral Critique 2 Alienation Revisited-Why does social acceleration lead to alienation?

Abstract

This article, which we are translating into Arabic, is an attempt to reconsider the concept of alienation as outlined by the young Karl Marx, by re-examining it in light of new elements based primarily on the acceleration of social life. The question that Hartmut Rosa seeks to answer is: What are the various forms of alienation that result from the logic of temporal change? Or, how does alienation emerge from the driving forces behind social acceleration in modern society? Hartmut Rosa responds by adopting a new thesis that sees acceleration as a source of more intense forms of alienation, related to time and space, objects and actions, the self and others. Under the pressure of an ever-increasing pace of acceleration, individuals face the world without being able to truly live in it or appropriate it—it appears to them as a cold, silent world that has lost all its luster.
